Montegiordano Obtains De.Co Recognition (Municipal Designation of Origin) for its “Black Truffle of Montegiordano”

On August 5, 2025, Montegiordano, a village on the Ionian coast of Cosenza, reached an important milestone: the official approval of the Municipal Designation of Origin (De.Co.) dedicated to the “Black Truffle of Montegiordano”.
It is the first De.Co. for black truffles in Calabria a recognition that confirms the deep bond between this prized fruit of the earth and the territory that hosts it, opening up new prospects for economic and tourist growth.

A strategic step for local promotion

The establishment of De.Co. is not just a formal act: it represents an investment in the future of the territory. With this certification, Montegiordano aims to strengthen its role in the food and wine scene, support farms, and encourage new entrepreneurial initiatives related to truffles.

The undisputed star is the black summer truffle, one of the most prized varieties in Europe, particularly suited to the local microclimate. Thanks to the calcareous soils typical of the area, it develops an intense aroma, a strong flavor, and a highly valuable nutritional profile, with a very low calorie content and high protein content: qualities that make it an increasingly sought-after product on international markets.

A project to promote local growth and businesses

De.Co. represents a concrete commitment to promoting the local area: it supports agricultural businesses, encourages the creation of controlled truffle grounds, and redevelops often unused agricultural land, also contributing to the development of experiential tourism. In collaboration with CREA Calabria, the municipality will offer technical and scientific support to start new crops: soil analysis, selection of the most suitable symbiotic plants (oaks, holm oaks, and hazelnuts), training of specialized operators, and assistance in promoting the product. The goal is to make Montegiordano a benchmark for truffle cultivation in Southern Italy.
